There is a wrecked slat grill in the upper left hand corner. There are several Dodge ambulances in the upper right area of the photograph as well as a GMC CCKW.
During WWI, Verdun, France was the site of one of the longest and deadliest battles in human history. German and French forces fought over the town and surrounding countryside for 299 days with casualties estimated as high as 976,000.
